Ground Installations

Installations of ground-mounted photovoltaic systems are becoming more frequent and in demand every day.

Sun Ballast structures for ground-mounted PV systems promise productivity and ecosystem benefits, and in this case no structural constraints of a roof need to be taken into account.

Installation examples

Our customers’ favourite: the Standard system

The ballasts in Sun Ballast’s Standard system consist of a wide range of inclinations, ranging from 0° for panels coplanar to the ground, up to 35°. The panels can be set up vertically, therefore fixed along the long side of the structure, or horizontally at the short sides of the ballasts.

On this particular type of surface, it is advisable to maintain a slope of no less than 10°/15° in order to ensure that vegetation growth does not affect the productivity of the plant and avoid any shading.

In addition, the Standard system is very versatile and easily modularized, allowing significant freedom in arranging the panels and making it possible to quickly and easily avoid obstacles in the installation area.

How to install

To install a ground-mounted system the ground must be prepared so that it will not be damaged and will remain unchanged over time.

First, we start with land clearing, which can be done by earthworks or turf removal. Those two different cleaning operations are both useful to level the soil and prepare it for the second step: the laying of non-woven fabric. This material is used as a sheeting to impede vegetation growth, and is ideal for this type of use because it neither frays when cut nor rots in contact with the soil.

The third step is filling the space with recycled material, replacing the soil removed in the first step. As the fourth and final step, it must be filled with stabilized material. This can be useful for creating a final aesthetically pleasing layer and can be of the colour and size you prefer.
